How to Get Started
Step 1: Complete Introductory Training
Finish Florida’s 40-hour introductory child care courses from the Department of Children and Families (DCF). Join our free Pre-Apprenticeship program, and complete these courses in a flexible, virtual format.
Step 2: Begin Working in a Classroom
With the help of our career navigation team, secure employment with a licensed early childhood provider. Earn money and gain hands-on classroom experience while continuing your professional growth.
Step 3: Earn Your Professional Credential
Continue building your career through the ELC’s free Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) while working toward your Florida Child Care Professional Credential (FCCPC).
Pre-Apprenticeship
For Individuals Entering the Field
The Pre-Apprenticeship track is a great option for recent high-school graduates or career changers interested in child development, social work, or education. No experience is required.
This program is designed to help you confidently step into a classroom with the foundational knowledge you need.
Through Pre-Apprenticeship, you will:
- Complete Florida’s required DCF 40-hour introductory child care courses
- Work through flexible, virtual coursework at your own pace
- Receive one-on-one mentoring and guidance
- Participate in workshops on professionalism and interviewing skills
- Explore long-term career pathways in early childhood education
- Access job placement assistance
Some participants may qualify for paid on-the-job training and internship opportunities. This hands-on model helps you earn money and gain experience while completing coursework.
This program is about preparation and confidence. You’ll be prepared for future enrollment in a registered apprenticeship program or an early childhood education certificate program through a technical college. And, you won’t just meet requirements, you’ll understand the why behind the work.

Upcoming 40-Hour Testing Dates
This testing session is reserved for participants enrolled in our Pre-Apprenticeship Program. It is not open to the public or general community testing. All testing is held at the ELC Teacher Training Institute at 9:00 AM.
Requirements to Work in Child Care
Requirements vary depending on the role and setting, but generally include:
- Completion of DCF introductory training
- Level 2 background screening
- Employment with a licensed early childhood provider
- Ongoing professional development
For those pursuing credentials, additional coursework and documented classroom experience are required.

No! The Pre-Apprenticeship program is designed for individuals entering the field for the first time.
How much does the program cost?
Pre-apprentice and Apprentice programs are tuition-free.
Can I work while completing training?
Absolutely. Apprenticeship participants earn while they learn and receive credit for both work and training hours.
Can I continue my education beyond the credential?
Yes! And if you earn your FCCPC with our Registered Apprenticeship Program, nine college credits can be applied toward an associate’s or bachelor’s degree at the State College of Florida. Also, the Florida T.E.A.C.H. Scholarship provides financial support for your continued education.
