Public Record Request

Public Records Pursuant to Chapter 119 Florida Statues

Requests are not required to be in writing, nor is the requestor required to provide their name or an explanation as to why the request is being made.

The Early Learning Coalition of Sarasota County (ELC) is committed to providing access to information that holds the government accountable. To provide complete and timely compliance with Florida’s public records laws, please consider the following information to help us provide you with the best response to your public records request:

  • Very broad requests can take longer to fill.
  • Requests must be for records in the possession of or prepared, owned, used, or retained by the ELC, and requests should be for sufficiently identifiable records. 
  • If a request is insufficient to identify the documents requested, you will be contacted as soon as possible for clarification.
  • If a request includes information that is confidential or otherwise exempt from public inspection or copying, the records will not be provided.

Fees for Public Records

In accordance with Section 119.07 (4), the ELC may impose the following fees:

  • One Sided Copies(up to 14″ × 8½”) : Up to $0.15 per page

  • Double Sided Copies: Up to $0.20 per page

  • All other copies (oversized, specialty): Actual cost of duplication 

  • Certified Copies: Up to $1.00 per copy 

  • Electronic records (CD, USB, email): Actual cost of duplication

  • Extensive IT or supervisory use: Special service charge (reasonable, based on actual cost)

*Under § 119.07(4)(d), Florida Statutes, if your request takes a significant amount of staff time or specialized technology to fulfill, we may add a reasonable service fee on top of copy costs.

 

The following are examples of records that are confidential and exempt from disclosure under Florida law, and are not subject to release:

  • Active police investigation files — § 119.071(2)(c)

  • Home addresses and personal details of certain public employees — § 119.071(4)(d)

  • Legal records prepared for active court cases — § 119.071(1)(d)

  • Names and identifying information of crime victims — § 119.071(2)(h)

  • Social security numbers — § 119.071(5)(a)

We ask that the request be made clear and that substantial detail is provided for the ELC to conduct a meaningful search. The ELC may ask questions about the request in order to respond to the request fully and in a timely manner. Please allow 5–7 business days for us to process your request.
