Storybook Street

Where books come to life and home libraries begin.

Storybook Street is the Early Learning Coalition of Sarasota County’s annual signature event. Designed for children ages birth to five, this free, family-friendly celebration immerses little ones in literacy, hands-on activities and story-based fun, making it a can’t miss event for the whole community.

This beloved book-themed wonderland blends stories, art, music, dance, science, drama, movement, and sensory play into one unforgettable morning of imagination.

What Makes Storybook Street So Special?

Storybook Street is more than a book giveaway. It is a full-scale, imagination-filled, immersive adventure.

Each year, 400 families gather for this high-energy, joy-filled celebration. In 2025, the event reached capacity in under 30 minutes and distributed more than 8,000 books in just two hours.

In 2026, all 400 free tickets sold out almost immediately after registration opened.

Families move from booth to booth as:

  • Stories are brought to life through performances
  • Music and movement fill the air
  • Hands-on science activities spark curiosity
  • Sensory play engages little learners
  • Art and creativity surround every corner

Children are encouraged to dress as their favorite storybook characters, adding whimsy and wonder to the experience. The result is part literacy festival, part preschool spectacle,  and entirely unforgettable.

20 Books Per Family

Every participating family leaves with:

  • 20 brand-new books
  • A swag bag filled with resources and goodies
  • Meaningful moments that help foster a lifelong love of reading

Books are distributed at literacy booths throughout the event, creating tangible keepsakes of the magic children just experienced.

For many families, Storybook Street is one of the largest single-day distributions of children’s books they will receive all year.

Why It Matters

Early literacy is one of the strongest predictors of long-term academic success.

When children have books at home and positive experiences with reading before kindergarten, they are more likely to:

  • Develop strong vocabulary
  • Build early comprehension skills
  • Enter school ready to learn
  • Grow into confident readers

Storybook Street turns literacy into celebration. It makes reading exciting, accessible, and joyful.

And for hundreds of Sarasota County families each year, it creates a memory that lasts far beyond the final page.
