How to Get Started
Starting a career in early childhood education is straightforward when you have clear steps.
Here is what the process looks like:
Step 1: Complete Required Introductory Training
- Finish Florida’s 40-hour introductory child care courses from the Department of Children and Families (DCF). Join ELC’s free Pre-Apprenticeship program, and complete these courses in a flexible, virtual format.
- Receive mentoring and career guidance along the way.
Step 2: Begin Working in a Classroom
- With the help of our career navigation team, secure employment with a licensed early childhood provider.
- Earn money and gain hands-on classroom experience while continuing your professional growth.
Step 3: Earn Your Professional Credential
- Enroll in the ELC’s free Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP).
- Work toward the Florida Child Care Professional Credential (FCCPC).
- Earn credit for both classroom and training hours.
Throughout the process, our team will:
- Help you understand your options

Requirements to Work in Child Care
Requirements vary depending on the role and setting, but generally include:

No! The Pre-Apprenticeship program is designed for individuals entering the field for the first time.
How much does the program cost?
Pre-apprentice and Apprentice programs are tuition-free.
Can I work while completing training?
Absolutely. Apprenticeship participants earn while they learn and receive credit for both work and training hours.
Can I continue my education beyond the credential?
Yes! And if you earn your FCCPC with our Registered Apprenticeship Program, nine college credits can be applied toward an associate’s or bachelor’s degree at the State College of Florida. Also, the Florida T.E.A.C.H. Scholarship provides financial support for your continued education.
